Overview
The English for Academic Purposes course helps students upgrade their English proficiency level and meet university entry requirements. This course is designed to prepare students for independent study and to familiarise them with an academic setting in terms of study techniques and student/lecturer relations and expectations. English for Academic Purposes prepares students for educational progression not only in Asian countries but countries worldwide. The various skills tutored during this course can assist students attain their desired tertiary education confidently.
Objective
- To promote written and verbal communication in English, which will complement parallel development in students’ study area.
- Have a basic understanding of how writing and research skills apply to examinations and assignments/project papers;
- Ensure that all students can use English efficiently and effectively in written and oral exercises.
Course Framework
Lessons conducted are student centred to promote student participation through our integrated study framework involving:
- Academic writing (planning, drafting and revising)
- Critical reading skills through skimming and scanning
- Pronunciation (vocabulary enhancement)
- Communication Skills (formal & informal)
- Presentation skills
Outcome:
- Producing and performing formal presentations
- Writing essays of different genres (persuasive, argumentative etc)
- Summarizing and critiquing academic texts
